Career Development at The Los Angeles Recording School

DEFINE YOUR FUTURE!

The keys to unlocking and managing a successful career in the entertainment industry are research, networking, preparation and staying current with industry trends. The Career Development Department proactively teaches these technical and professional skills to students throughout their education – supporting their vocational goals, and helping to bridge the gap between academia and the workplace.

The Career Development Department is staffed by a group of entertainment industry professionals who are dedicated to opening doors for the successful graduate. Our Advisors and Staff help students and graduates navigate through the industry, prepare them for contact with potential employers, as well as the realities of the business, and ensure that they have the skills they need to secure employment, build a career, and sustain it successfully.

THE CAREER DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT'S SERVICES INCLUDE:

• A Business Communications course internal to the curriculum specifically designed to prepare students to effectively enter the professional workplace – through internships and entry-level employment. The curriculum includes a combination of lectures, hands-on research assignments, networking and team-building exercises, as well as guest speakers.

• Topics of instruction include: resume and cover letter creation, interviewing techniques, networking strategies, research and job-hunting skills, how to “take a meeting” in Hollywood, the importance of mentors and how to land one, survival as an independent contractor, pitching techniques, cold-calling and informational interviews, and the professionalism required to advance within the industry.

• Guest Speaker Lecture Series: Each month the Career Development Department hosts several guest speakers from various aspects of the Recording/Music/Film/Media industry. These experiences provide students with unprecedented access to current industry professionals, so they can receive real world advice, hear “stories from the trenches,” ask targeted questions to those working in the industry, put their networking skills into practice, and gain inspiration from professionals whom they admire. Graduates are also invited to these events as a means of staying connected to the school and their peers, creating a real environment in which to network.

• A regularly updated list of open jobs and internships sent weekly to students and alumni, via email blasts.

• Personalized career planning and advisement: Career Advisors have one-on-one meetings with each student to help perfect their resumes and cover letters, and create an individualized career plan.

• An Internship Program whereby students can gain hands-on industry experience while still in school.

• A regularly updated list of industry-related events and opportunities in the community that is sent to students and alumni.

• An online community for alumni to update their achievements, promote networking and continue to foster professional relationships.

• A Career Development suite – open for student use – that contains office machinery (computers, printer, copier, fax machine), event listings, a Resource Library and Career Development forms/paperwork (i.e., resume and cover letter templates, internship applications, etc.).

• Our regularly updated resource library contains industry source books, guides, books and magazines, and is available to students during regular business hours for research and job-seeking.

NOTE: Students at all stages – those in the program, those preparing for graduation, and alumni throughout their careers – may utilize Career Development services, provided that they are in good academic and financial standing with the school.
